Background of the Study
Polling unit arrangements play a pivotal role in ensuring that elections are conducted smoothly, efficiently, and fairly. In Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau State, the organization of polling units directly impacts the ease with which voters can access voting stations, cast their votes, and contribute to the electoral process (Jibrin & Usman, 2023). Issues such as overcrowding, long waiting times, and the accessibility of polling stations can discourage voter participation and potentially result in the disenfranchisement of eligible voters, particularly in rural areas (Bala & Musa, 2024). The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is responsible for the arrangement and management of polling units, yet challenges such as poor planning and resource limitations continue to affect the effectiveness of these arrangements. This study will appraise the effectiveness of polling unit arrangements in ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections in Bokkos during the 2023 general elections.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by INEC to improve the polling unit arrangements in Bokkos, there have been reports of logistical challenges, such as overcrowding and delays in the voting process. These issues raise concerns about whether the polling unit arrangements are effective in ensuring a smooth, free, and fair election. This study will assess the effectiveness of the polling unit arrangements and the implications of these challenges for voter participation in Bokkos.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of polling unit arrangements in Bokkos during the 2023 elections.
To assess the impact of polling unit arrangements on voter turnout and participation in Bokkos.
To identify the challenges and shortcomings in the polling unit arrangements that affected the election process in Bokkos.
1.4 Research Questions
How effective were the polling unit arrangements in Bokkos during the 2023 elections?
What was the impact of polling unit arrangements on voter turnout and participation in Bokkos?
What challenges did voters face due to the polling unit arrangements in Bokkos?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Ineffective polling unit arrangements significantly reduce voter turnout in Bokkos.
Properly arranged polling units contribute to the smooth conduct of elections and increase voter confidence.
Logistical challenges in polling unit arrangements negatively affect the overall electoral process in Bokkos.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the strengths and weaknesses of polling unit arrangements in Bokkos and offer recommendations for improvement. By understanding how polling unit logistics affect voter turnout and participation, the findings could inform future electoral reforms aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of polling stations across Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on polling unit arrangements in Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, particularly during the 2023 general elections. It will not extend to other local government areas or examine national-level polling arrangements. A limitation of the study is that its findings may be influenced by the subjective experiences of voters and polling officials.
